Built-In Bathtubs

In continuation of our first Blog, 'Freestanding Bathtubs' we are now going to look at the Pro's and Con's of Built-In Tubs.

Built-In Bathtubs:

The Built-in tub is known for its practicality and ease of cleaning. With the right built in tub you can create as much of a focal point as the freestanding tub. Let’s dive into the pro’s and con’s of the Built-In Tubs!

Pro’s

  • Price:
  • Built-in tubs are, generally speaking, less expensive than a freestanding tub.  Where the cost might go up will depend on how you decide to finish around the built-in tub. Especially if you are doing a tub/shower combo.

  • Space:

    • These tubs are more space-economical. They fit flush between walls in an alcove and are typically tucked out of the way, where as freestanding tub, to look right, require space around them.  A built-in tub is great for small spaces.  They are also great when built next to a freestanding shower in which the deck of the tub can extend into the shower to act as a bench.

  • Storage:
    • Because built-in tubs are against walls you can get creative with how to provide storage. You can create long horizontal or vertical niches with accent tiles. If you are just doing a tub with no shower, more option then not, you can utilize the tub deck itself for storing shampoo, soaps, candles etc.
  • Easier to Clean:
    • Built-in Tubs have less surface to clean whereas with freestanding tubs, you have the inside and outside of the tub to clean and depending on where it is located, it may be a bit more difficult to get in and behind the tub for a thorough cleaning.

Con’s

  • Flexibility:

    • With Built-in tubs you need walls, or an alcove to place the tub, therefore limiting the area in the room to place the tub.  With Freestanding tubs you are more flexible as to where you can place the tub in the room...within reason.

  • Selection:

    • There are not as many chic and unique options for built-in tubs. This means you will need to be more creative with what you do around the tub in terms of tile etc to create that unique feature in the room.

  • Look:

    • Overall it really comes down to personal taste and the size of your bathroom when deciding to go with either a freestanding or built-in tub. For that wow factor, luxury spa feel, it’s hard to look away from a great freestanding tub.  The built-in tubs just don’t compare when we look at the style and overall ‘look’ of the tub.

In the end it really comes down to personal preference. If you have the space and are willing to overlook the disadvantages the freestanding tub has then 100% go with the statement piece, you won’t regret it.  If you are more practical and don’t have the space for a freestanding tub, don’t worry, there are options out there for built-in tubs and with the numerous options for tile, you can make it a feature without breaking the bank.
